As mental health professionals, we play a critical role in addressing the systemic disparities that affect the well-being of African-American communities. This presentation focuses on the urgent need for white therapists to cultivate the competencies necessary to provide effective and culturally sensitive services to African-American clients.
In this session, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of self-awareness, recognizing and challenging microaggressions, and developing cultural competency and sensitivity. The presenter will share practical strategies for energetically standing for African-American clients, while acknowledging the historical and ongoing impacts of racism on mental health. Participants will learn how to create a safe and affirming therapeutic environment that fosters trust and healing.
Using a combination of didactic instruction, case examples, and interactive exercises, this presentation will equip participants with actionable insights they can apply in their own practice. Whether you’re an experienced therapist or just beginning your journey in mental health, you will leave with a renewed sense of purpose and clear steps for better serving African-American clients.
By prioritizing cultural humility and responsiveness, this session aims to move us closer to a more equitable and just mental health system—one that truly supports the well-being of all individuals.
